This event serves as an opportunity for the UK’s foremost discretionary portfolio managers and fund researchers to celebrate their profession.
We’ve put together an exciting agenda, featuring keynote speakers that have shaken the world of sport, business and geopolitics. This, as ever, is accompanied by a programme of workshops with leading fund managers, and the opportunity to catch up with both your peers and the Citywire team over a day and a half.
There is no charge for attending (which is strictly by invitation only) and you will earn up to eight hours of structured CPD.

- Deepen their understanding of this year’s key geopolitical events and their implications for portfolios.
- Discover the outlook for the global monetary system, including the potential outcomes of the transition to a cashless society.
As usual, we have put together a lineup of keynote speakers for this year’s Retreat that will give attendees food for thought regarding what the investment landscape has on the horizon.

Small, Mid,& the Grid
This presentation explores the broadening out of the market that may already be underway by highlighting two key areas:
First, it highlights the historic opportunity in US Mid and Small cap companies. Second, it examines the Smart Grid theme, offering exposure to the $21 trillion global electric grid upgrade.
The First Trust Nasdaq® Clean Edge® Smart Grid Infrastructure UCITS ETF has been one of the lower volatility clean energy investments, while many of its holdings have been implementing AI for years. GRID also offers pure-play exposure to the companies powering the data center buildout.
The First Trust SMID Rising Dividend Achievers UCITS ETF
provides pure-play exposure to 2 historically undervalued pockets of the market: Mid/Small Cap & Value Stocks, but risks are clear. First Trust will highlight how a rules-based methodology can help investors mitigate the major known risk to “SMID” caps and seek to avoid value traps.
Workshop Objective:
1. Discuss where we are in the “Broadening Out” Rally
2. Detail the Smart Grid Theme
3. Detail the historic opportunity in Mid & Small & Value Stocks
4. Articulate both Stock Selection & Weighting Methodologies

Optimism about the potential of AI to drive future profits has pushed some mega-cap tech stock valuations to stratospheric levels. Global Equity Portfolio Manager Rick Schmidt will explore how Harding Loevner’s investment process guards against behavioral biases while simultaneously uncovering structural future growth.

Global Credit – Rebalancing to Alpha from Beta
Within the global bond universe, investment grade bonds continue to look compelling. The asset class benefits from historically compelling yields. Such high yield levels cushion investors from losses and should provide attractive returns relative to cash especially now that we are in a period of synchronized global central bank easing. Supply expectations for global investment bonds are highly manageable, while demand is strong, supported by retail flows out of cash and institutional demand, especially from de-risking defined benefit pension schemes. Lastly fundamentals are strong and should be resilient even in the event of a harder landing.
The tighter spread environment does however mean investors need to refocus on alpha from beta gains and focus increasingly on how strong research and active management can boost returns via security and sector selection.
Workshop Objective: We introduce our top performing Meridian Global Credit Fund. We explain how active management can continue to thrive in this environment with the fund aiming to focus on a number of emerging themes in global credit including real estate de-leveraging, auto sector headwinds and consolidation in the European banking sector. We show how we look to empower our experienced global research team to add alpha predominately via security selection.
Company Profile: In 1924, MFS launched the US’ first open-end mutual fund to give everyday investors access to the markets. One hundred years later, as a full-service global investment manager serving financial advisors, intermediaries and institutional clients, we celebrate a century of active management. Tested and refined across market environments, our investing approach combines collective expertise, long-term discipline and thoughtful risk management to create value responsibly for clients. Supported by our culture of shared values and collaboration, our teams of diverse thinkers actively debate ideas and assess material risks to uncover what we believe are the best investment opportunities in the market.

Systematic Liquid Alternatives : A new perspective on alpha
The painful failures of traditional sources of diversification in recent years have emphasised the need to incorporate truly uncorrelated, complementary sources of return into traditional portfolios.
Equity and fixed income indexes ended 2023 near their highest correlation on record, as these two assets moved in relative lockstep for most of the preceding 24 months – and history shows that this was no fluke.
Investors have responded with increasing interest in alternative investments. Evolution in the alternative investment space has allowed us to evaluate and extrapolate different sources of alpha more effectively. We believe that liquid alternatives can play a key role in addressing the diversification dilemma.
Workshop Objective: To introduce the Morgan Stanley Systematic Liquid Alpha Fund (SLA). SLA is a daily dealing, UCITS fund designed to be simple, repeatable and defensive by nature. It was launched in February 2024 and has a strategy track record going back to 2018.
Company Profile: MSIM, with $1.5 trillion in assets under management as of March 31, 2024, is a client-centric organization dedicated to providing investment and risk-management solutions to a wide range of investors and institutions including corporations, pension plans, intermediaries, sovereign wealth funds, central banks, endowments and foundations, governments and consultant partners worldwide.
With over four decades of asset management experience, our investment strategies span the risk/return spectrum across geographies, investment styles and asset classes, including equity, fixed income, alternatives and private markets. MSIM offers its clients personalized attention, the intelligence and creativity of some of the brightest professionals in the industry, and access to the global resources of Morgan Stanley.

A purist quality approach to US equities
The US stock market outperformance in recent years has been deserved based on its underlying fundamentals. In essence, it is the highest quality market in the world. However, much of this outperformance has been driven by a small number of companies, masking several long-term secular growth opportunities throughout the US that remain relatively underappreciated. Ninety One’s Joseph Knight explains why a differentiated quality approach - selecting niche leaders with dominant market positions and more resilient revenue streams - has helped American Franchise deliver significantly greater profits growth than the S&P 500, in addition to offering protection in more challenging times.
Workshop Objective:
1. To inform delegates that a differentiated approach to quality investing in the US market can help investors navigate this “noisy” market – in both up and down times.
2. Showcasing the importance of looking at resilient revenue streams in the quality equities space.
3. To inform delegates of the importance of downside protection in more challenging market conditions

Name of the game (where will rate cuts finish)
2024 has seen investors obsess over the timing of the first rate cut by major central banks, and to a lesser extent the number of rate cuts priced for 2024. However, we think investors should be thinking about where rates could be at the end of a rate cutting cycle, and what that implies for fixed income markets. In particular, whilst short-duration strategies might not naturally come to mind in a rate-cutting cycle, might it be an under the radar opportunity if we were to see a soft landing? We also explore where we believe you are being best compensated from credit risk within the universe given the move in credit spreads we have seen in the past 18 months.
Workshop Objective: Understand the current environment for bond investors and the value that a short duration fund could potentially offer investors going forward.

Broadening US equity exposure in an Election Year
Macro-economic data continues to be supportive for US equities as inflation abates, labour markets remain robust, and economic growth remains positive. We continue to evaluate the opportunity of a diversified approach as anticipated rate cuts appear supportive of market breadth. While the magnificent-7 are supported by structural tailwinds, in this session we will discuss the opportunities beyond the S&P 500.
Growth in the S&P 500 remains strong, but valuation gaps suggest an opportunity in mid- & small-caps amidst the soft landing. Dividend strategies provide exposure to pro-cyclical sectors, with less overcrowding risk. Dividends are defensive and outperform historically in extreme volatility. We will evaluate the risk of volatility ticking higher in a contentious US election season.
Workshop Ojectives: In this session we will discuss the opportunities in and beyond the S&P 500, by evaluating the current investor positioning, market trends, election outcomes likely to impact US equity returns

From headwinds to tailwinds, time to look again at global listed real estate
The pricing in select listed real estate sub-markets is too cheap. There is a clear arbitrage between public and private markets, which has led to M&A increasing significantly. A substantial amount of capital exited the sector as interest rates rose, and investors have yet to return. However, fundamentals are strong, and we expect that earnings growth, coupled with anticipated interest rate cuts should drive share prices as demand (for the right real estate) exceeds supply. Hard or soft landing we believe the listed real estate sector will provide a resilient, compounding income stream for investors.
Workshop Objective:
1. Explain the role of listed RE in a model portfolio
2. Understand why the outlook for the RE sector is strong
3. Describe the dominant position best in class REITs have vs competitors
