Citywire South East Retreat 2024
In the year that Citywire celebrates its 25th birthday, we are delighted to bring the beloved Citywire South East Retreat back to our events calendar. Join us on 6-7 June at Goodwood House, West Sussex.
As always, this is a fantastic opportunity to meet with likeminded people in the profession, share ideas and most of all to hear from influential fund managers who will give their insight into different strategies for handling client investments. Pair that with some thoughtfully selected keynote speakers, and it has all the makings of an event you do not want to miss.
As with all of our regional retreats, there is no charge for attending (attendance is strictly by invitation only), and you will earn up to 8 hours of structured CPD.
Learning Objectives:
- Engage with market-leading investment strategies to discuss how they are navigating the current landscape
- Describe the central role of agriculture in the path to net zero
- Discover how to build resilience in a high-pressure, fast-paced professional environment
It wouldn’t be a Citywire event without a phenomenal lineup of keynote speakers, starting with Wolfgang Manchau, columnist for the New Statesman and a expert on european politics. There is more than one election this year and results elsewhere will shape choices facing the UK Government and investors. After lunch we will then be joined by Former President of the National Farmers' Union of England and Wales, Minette Batters. Minette will inform us on how the often overlooked pillar of our economy, agriculture, will drive the green transition. To complete the lineup in the South East, on the morning of the 7th legendary rugby union referee Nigel Owens will be discussing resilience and dealing with difficult work environments.
With it being our first event back in the South East, we expect there to be high demand, so register today to secure your place. We hope to see you there for another great retreat!

Wolfgang Münchau
Wolfgang Münchau is considered one of the world’s foremost experts on the Eurozone. He is a columnist with The New Statesman. For many years, he wrote the European economic column of the Financial Times. He is known for his in depth knowledge and analysis of the political economy, both in Europe and globally.
A skilled communicator, his views and insights are particularly appreciated by senior corporate leaders as he can take complex situations and scenarios and pare these back to the key issues and relate them to the business audiences.
His book, “The Meltdown Years: The Unfolding of The Global Economic Crisis“, won the prestigious GetAbstract business book award in its original German-language version, Vorbeben (2008). He is the recipient of the 2012 SABEW award for best international columnist.
Together with economist, Susanne Mundschenk, he co-founded and edits Eurointelligence.com, a news analysis service dedicated to providing information and debate about the economics, finance and politics of the Eurozone. The Eurointelligence Daily Morning Newsbriefing is widely considered to be the most incisive daily information sources on the Eurozone. His columns are syndicated to El Pais, Handelsblatt and Corriere della Sera.
He is a member of the European Council on Foreign Relations. In 2014, Wolfgang was the John F. Kennedy Memorial Fellow at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University. He was the recipient of the 2012 SABEW award for best international columnist and the Wincott award for young journalist of the year in 1989.
He has written three other German-language books, “Kernschmelze im Finanzsystem” (Meltdown in the Financial System), “Das Ende der sozialen Marktwirtschaft” (The End of the Social Free-market), and “Makrostrategie” (Macro-Investment Strategy)
Previously, Wolfgang co-founded and served as editor-in-chief of FT Deutschland. He holds Master’s degrees in mathematics and journalism.
Minette Batters
Minette is the Former President of the National Farmers’ Union, a position that she held between 2018 and 2024, where she was the first woman to hold the post. During her tenure, she was responsible for representing 47,000 members of the farming community through a period of change and instability. The issues Minette faced ranged from political turbulence, the after effects of Brexit, and sustainability challenges.
Raised on her father’s tenant farm in Wiltshire, Minette was dissuaded by him from following in his footsteps. Instead, she took a Cordon Bleu course and launched and ran her own catering business for 20 years. However, upon her father’s retirement, she made the decision to take on the tenancy. Upon her election to the NFU (first as Vice-President in 2014, and then as President), she juggled running the farm with her responsibilities at the Union.
Working closely with four different Prime Ministers and six different Environment Secretaries during her period at the helm of the Union, Minette has unique insights into the political landscape and leadership. She was responsible for representing the views of the entire farming community during Brexit negotiations and during the Covid-19 pandemic, which caused unprecedented food shortages. Subsequent challenges she tackled while she was leader included the spillover effects of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which involved price increases for both fuel and produce, and labour shortages. She has been an active campaigner for a thriving rural economy and food standards - notably bringing together a range of chefs, environmentalists, consumer groups and animal welfare experts in a 2020 campaign, which led to over 1 million people signing the NFU Food Standards Petition. She has been included in BBC Radio 4’s Women’s Hour Power List, and in 2021 was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant to Wiltshire.
Nigel Owens
Nigel Owens is widely acknowledged as the best referee in rugby union. His decision-making, approach to dealing with players, knowledge and interpretation of the rules is acclaimed by players, coaches and commentators. He is also the sport’s only openly-gay official.
Nigel gained a reputation for being able to implement the rules in such a way as to be fair, and also to allow the flow of the game. He won the respect of all involved in the game and mixed judicious rulings with humour and authority on the pitch.
Privately, Nigel struggled with conflicts between his sexuality and some of the attitudes in the world of rugby. Despite considering extreme courses of action, he eventually made his personal life public, and with the exception of some ignorant comments from the stands and on social media, was widely supported by figures within and outside of rugby.
Away from the pitch Nigel has gone on to host chat shows and quiz programmes for the Welsh-language broadcaster S4C, and is arguably rugby’s most famous referee. When he was given charge of the 2015 World Cup final, approval of his appointment was almost universal and after the Australia/New Zealand game his role was praised by all.

Taking a core approach to global equities
Tom Record and Christine Baalham, co-portfolio managers of Fidelity Global Special Situations Fund, will examine the outlook for global equity markets and shine a light on the key factors and themes shaping their latest investment thinking.
They will discuss how the investment philosophy and process underpinning the Fund is constructed to capture opportunities across a range of traditional styles by exploiting change. Within this, they will highlight why fundamental research is most valuable at times of change, where behavioural errors can create abundant mispriced opportunities that can be exploited.
Tom and Christine will outline how this translates into current positioning, proving an insight into how the portfolio is balanced across opportunities in corporate change / recovery situations, compounding value opportunities and unique businesses.
Workshop Objectives: Understand the current issues influencing the outlook for global equities across key markets and regions.
Gain an insight how behavioural errors by other investors at times of change can create opportunities.

Consistently outperforming the S&P 500 over a decade-long period with a passive strategy
Outperforming the S&P 500 is the benchmark of success for US Large Cap fund/index. VanEck, with Morningstar's Equity Research, has beaten this standard in 6 of the last 8 years. Last year alone, the index outperformed the S&P 500 by over 6%, even with ~22% less total exposure in the “Magnificent 7”. (6% vs 28%).
How? By rigorously analysing over 1,500 stocks for long-term competitive advantages (Moats) and fair value, then incorporating them into a passive equal-weight index that VanEck's ETF tracks. This approach has led to a ~275% outperformance over the S&P 500 since 2007 (LIVE INDEX).
In this session, we'll delve into why our MOTU ETF, its emphasis on long-term competitive advantages, fair valuations, and careful index construction, should be a core part of your portfolio.
Workshop Objective: Investors will gain insight into Morningstar's equity research, identifying Wide Moat firms, Fair-Value assessments, index performance highlights, and why our suite of Wide Moat philosophy ETFs belongs in core portfolios.
Company Profile: Established in 1955, VanEck is a prominent global ETF and fund provider with over $100 billion in assets. As one of the top 10 ETF providers in the US, our reach extends across Asia, Australia, and Europe. Big in the USA – or time to recalibrate?

This shift has altered portfolio realities for international investors, with US Equities now making up a substantial 70% of Global Equity indices. Furthermore, the “Magnificent 7” have asserted their dominance within US equities. Investors now stand at a crossroads, with the opportunity to either reinforce these trends or diversify away from them.
Workshop Objective: We present a three-step framework to inform allocations:
1. US selection
2. Ex-US allocation
3. Routes to diversify global equities
