Once again the much-loved Citywire South West Retreat is back, bringing together the best of the region’s financial advice and wealth management community.
This is your invitation to join us at the Marriott St. Pierre in Chepstow on the 20-21 of March for a day and a half of valuable insights from fund managers and keynote speakers into the pivotal factors influencing your investment decisions in the upcoming year, and the opportunity to network with your peers.
As with all of our retreats, attendance is exclusively by invitation only and you will be able to earn up to 8 hours of structured CPD.
By the end of the event, attendees will be able to:
- Critically evaluate the opportunities and challenges of different investment strategies across multiple asset classes
- Identify and apply strategies for building resilience and managing high-stakes situations
- Describe the impacts of artificial intelligence on economics, finance, and politics
Kickstarting day 1 of the retreat will be Professor David Bailey, lecturer at Birmingham Business School and Senior Fellow at UK in a Changing Europe where he contributes to research that examines the UK’s domestic challenges as well as its role on the global stage. Drawing on his expertise in regional development and the green transition, David will discuss the potential impact of Labour’s new industrial policies.
After lunch, Steven Chatterton will be in conversation with Walter Pasquarelli, an eminent expert on AI, and its impact on economics, finance, and politics. As a strategic advisor to Google and Microsoft, he shapes policies and strategies for harnessing AI's potential. This will be an open, curated discussion so you will have the chance to put your questions to him too.
On our final morning, we will hear from professional cyclist and winner of the 2008 European Downhill Championship Gee Atherton. Known for his daring feats on the world’s most treacherous ridgelines and triumphs at Redbull Hardline, he will share his approach to resilience and offer insight on managing high-stake situations.

Louise Leigh
Louise Leigh is living proof that a midlife crisis doesn’t have to involve a Harley Davidson and an underwear model (yet).
Since starting to do stand-up in her forties she has been enjoyed by critics and audiences alike. Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year finalist, British Comedian of the Year semi-finalist, Funny Women semi-finalist.

Gee Atherton
Known across the world of mountain biking as Gee Atherton, he is one of the most decorated, all-round downhill riders the sport of mountain biking has ever seen. He’s also one of the most committed, hardest bike riders that cycling has ever seen. Full stop. His list of achievements goes on, and on, and the middle Atherton sibling has been a sensation in the sport since the age of 15: double World Champion, twice World Cup Overall Champion, a Red Bull Hardline winner, a silver medallist at Red Bull Rampage and he holds nine World Cups. The 2019 season saw Gee embark on a new venture with his very own Atherton Bikes brand alongside his sister, Rachel, where he raced and developed their new DH bike on the World Cup circuit.
His mental and physical toughness are legendary and his daring big mountain projects regularly set the internet alight. But his list of difficult moments and brutal crashes is also a long one. Sadly, it goes with the territory of pushing the boundaries. While filming his Ridgeline series in North Wales in 2021, Gee was airlifted to hospital and had to fight for his life. "I can honestly say that being injured hasn’t put me off this kind of riding," he said. "In fact it’s the complete opposite. The thought of more of these challenges is the light at the end of the tunnel, the reason I’ve pushed on with physio so early, it’s what helps me face the daily grind of painful rehab". He returned to the saddle, as he has done numerous times before in his magical career. His love of the bike shines through, and gets him ready for what’s next for one of the greatest of all time.

Snakes, Ladders & Market Shifts
In the original version of the game Snakes and Ladders, players navigate a board of good and bad deeds. The good deeds, such as thrift, penitence and industry, are rewarded with ladders which let players advance quickly. Bad deeds, such as cruelty, indolence and greed, are marked with snake heads. Players who land in a snake square are sent tumbling back down the board. This is thought to be where the phrase ‘back to square one’ originates.
With equity market valuations looking exuberant, geopolitical risks festering and inflationary pressures down but not out, there is the risk that markets are vulnerable to a nasty surprise.
At Ruffer, we are laser focused on ensuring this doesn’t happen to our investors in a setup where we see lots of snakes in the year ahead.
Workshop Objective:
1. The session will educate investors on the likely paths financial markets may follow from here
2. This session will educate investors on identifying areas of both risk and opportunities for investment portfolios
Company Profile:
At Ruffer, our aim is to deliver consistent positive returns through an unconstrained approach, regardless of how financial markets perform. We seek to achieve this by maintaining an offsetting balance of growth and protective assets and have achieved a long, successful track record of protecting and growing the value of our clients’ assets. Our approach has been successful through periods of market fragility including the bursting of the dot.com bubble, the credit crisis and covid-19. We aim to continue this success, whatever the future holds.
