9:10 am - 9:50 am 2023 clearly marks the return of ‘beta’ in fixed income, offering yields akin to equity dividends. A portfolio that relies too heavily on fixed income can limit your ability to grow your capital over time. So how do the banks balance out and convince clients of the necessity to build a core portfolio? What has been new to this new wave of surge for fixed income? Will equity be back in the good graces of investors this year? In stormier weather, what kinds of sectors would be the relatively safe haven? It’s said that China equities are interesting again; what markets will you bet on for Q4 2023 and early 2024? Are real assets, infrastructure and hedge funds the gems for this year? Panellists:

Investing in China’s Future Growth Drivers
Presentation Summary:
Recent events have added urgency to China’s move away from property and infrastructure to a more diversified, self-sufficient, technology-led growth model. The innovation story is not new. China has already built global leadership in a number of areas. But this represents only the start of a long journey, and there is a long runway for growth. The market capitalisation of China’s top 20 software companies is only 4% of the US. The AI race is on, but what’s the durability of this trend?

Capital reallocation across all asset classes is required to facilitate that change, and we believe fixed income plays a critical role, while representing an attractive investment opportunity.
Allspring Global Investments will share more insights on how climate transition investment grade and high yield portfolios can effectively be decarbonized while enabling the transition to a net-zero economy without sacrificing performance with our climate transition credit strategies.

Japan - The Investment Hotspot
Presentation Summary:
Japan is in a sweet spot right now due to a confluence of cyclical and structural tailwinds and these are leading to stronger than expected corporate earnings. The recent TSE initiative is a game changer that builds on prior corporate governance reforms and the journey of improving profitability looks set to continue. With a little bit of inflation and wage growth, Japan has the best chance in a generation to move out of the deflationary era that has held it back for so long, and the trends of green transformation and friend-shoring could mean a much stronger capex environment moving forwards. Japan remains substantially under-owned by international investors and even after strong returns this year, the long-term investment case looks solid. Hear from Eastspring Investments as they share their insights on the market and why a contrarian approach is the best way to exploit episodes of behavioral mispricing.

The “Golden Age” of Private Credit: All That Glitters May Not Be Gold
Presentation Summary:
With the sharp rise in base rates and a resilient economy, floating rate private credit loans have outperformed other constituents of the fixed income universe, particularly when accounting for volatility. While secular tailwinds should continue to support private credit, the rapid expansion in AUM warrants a closer examination of the internals driving that growth. Private credit has shown the ability to weather macroeconomic shocks before, but it is a heterogenous asset class and is not immune from speculative excesses, as the 2021-vintage shows. Looking ahead, Benefit Street believes that a disciplined and selective approach will be the key to identifying dislocations in the market and generating sustainable returns over the next market cycle.

Investing in the Energy Transition
Presentation Summary:
How are asset owners playing their part in the global transition to green energy? It is not always straightforward to combine doing the right thing with generating returns. But regulators and governments are increasingly incentivising the transition, implying significant investment opportunities. In addition, the weight of assets attracted to sustainable investment goals in an unsophisticated manner suggests there are potentially large rewards for investors with an industry-leading approach.
We will share our pioneering philosophy in this space, starting with a quantitative climate alignment analysis, and then focusing on companies with a high potential opportunity in the energy transition alongside an active engagement with climate laggards.
