Citywire New Model Adviser Investment Retreat 2024
We are delighted to present Citywire’s New Model Adviser Investment Retreat 2024.
This event is the perfect opportunity to explore the investment landscape and hear from expert fund managers on navigating client portfolios and fund selection. As ever, you will also get the chance to watch our inspiring keynote speakers and catch-up with your peers.
For the second year running, we will be heading to Surrey’s Pennyhill Park on 12 and 13 September.
As with all our residential retreats, attendance is by invitation only and you will earn up to eight hours structured CPD.
We will be hoping to achieve the following learning objectives:
- Understand how geopolitical events are impacting markets around the world.
- Gain insights into different asset classes and how they can be used in portfolio construction.
- Learn how to prepare for shocks in client portfolios.
As well as our fund manager sessions, we also have a fantastic line-up of keynote speakers.
On the eve of the US election, the BBC’s former North America editor Jon Sopel will be giving his insights into a hugely tumultuous time in world politics.
A 16-year BBC veteran, Sopel, who has previously clashed with Donald Trump at a press conference, now co-hosts the acclaimed podcast, The News Agents.
You will also be hearing from geologist Dr Karen Hanghøj, Director of the British Geological Survey.
An expert in the metals and mining industry, Hanghøj has studied critical minerals like cobalt and lithium, which are vital to the UK’s economy and national security.
You will finally be hearing from Scotty Mills, the highest-ranking black officer in the history of the Royal Marines, who has led the British Commandos around the world.
As well as the military, Mills has advised the Football Association, working closely with former England football manager Gareth Southgate during the men’s semi-final World Cup run. Mills will be giving us lessons in leadership and resilience.
We can’t wait to see you there.

The UK small cap resurgence is here. Seize the opportunity!
It is no new news to talk about outflows from UK smaller companies and the relative underperformance. We believe this one-way traffic has passed its peak and much like pulling on an elastic band there is only so much it will stretch before springing back; we believe we have passed this inflection point. Many of the headwinds of the last few years have dissipated and they’re many companies continually delivering strong fundamental returns for shareholders but still trading at discount valuations. This ongoing underlying performance combined with improving sentiment should be a potent cocktail for future returns. Josh McCathie delves into these matters during the session whilst highlighting how he is seeking to take advantage of this compelling opportunity in UK small caps.
Workshop Objective:
Debunking UK small cap underperformance by focusing on the fundamentals.
Why momentum has been building but the best is yet to come.
Taking a total return approach – why we focus on income and small caps.

Risk and return from the bottom up
Investing involves taking risks—but not blindly. In financial markets, prices move daily, and higher prices both increase risk and raise the bar for further returns. In the real world, some risks are costly to protect against, and some offer little compensation for sticking your neck out. But others are underappreciated, providing opportunities to generate attractive returns and mitigate risk at the same time. As we look at the world, we see a few risks that offer both pitfalls and potential returns for investors: the energy transition, deglobalisation, chip scarcity, and ongoing government deficits. Against a backdrop of high stockmarket valuations and high apparent faith in central banks, these risks point to a cautious outlook for broad markets, particularly if inflation proves sticky. But for a bottom-up investor, these same risks offer attractive pockets of opportunity.
Workshop Objectives:
• Understand how the semiconductor ecosystem works and why energy is an important consideration for chip manufacturers
• Explain how the energy system works and which companies are likely to benefit from the energy transition
• What impact government deficits have on opportunities within stock and bond markets
• Understand how inflation affects multi-asset portfolios and inflation-resilient assets

UK SMID, a driver of returns in UK equity markets
Reasons not to own UK assets are draining away. The economy is improving and inflation is close to target. By the end of the summer, we may well have a new government and lower interest rates. There will certainly have been more bids for UK assets. These dynamics favour mid-caps over large. Valuations look too attractive to pass up, particularly for high-quality companies actively competing on the global stage. Fund manager Alexandra Jackson will discuss the catalysts supporting UK markets and where we see the best opportunities to invest across the lately overlooked UK SMID-cap space.
Workshop Objective:
- Catalysts for the UK: macro impacting UK Markets, monetary policy, M&A
- The time for mid-caps – what history and the market is telling us
- Defining a UK quality, growth business

Seeking sustainable returns through investing in Property
Whether investors are seeking financially sustainable returns (via income) or ESG sustainable returns, or elements of both, we will look at what factors are key to assess when investing in Property.
We will discuss the macroeconomic landscape, why now is the time to consider Property, and the opportunity when considering the regulatory market.
Clients continue to search for investments that have true positive impact. Investing in Property could provide the platform where the positive impact can be measured and demonstrated on people and planet.
For those where impact isn’t crucial, understanding the wider opportunity/risks around various ESG factors and how they are managed, is essential if you want to maximize returns.
Workshop Objective:
Understand the role of real assets and how diversification contributes to clients’ portfolios.
Understand the wider importance of ESG within Property investing.
Understand how funds could offer sustainable returns and sustainable impact.
