Citywire New Model Adviser Investment Retreat 2023
We are very excited to launch our New Model Adviser Investment Retreat 2023. The event will give you a comprehensive overview of the investment landscape. Whether you are adding bonds on rising yields, considering a return to growth stocks, or trimming your property exposure, this event will equip you with everything you need to know to get the best results for your clients.
This year we will be heading to Pennyhill Park in Surrey on 14 and 15 September to answer the toughest questions facing advisers looking for the right solutions for their clients.
As with all our residential retreats, attendance is strictly by invitation only and you will earn up to 8 hours structured CPD.
We will be working with the follow learning objectives to help you:
- Understand how the world’s major economic issues are affecting investment performance.
- Develop skill in spotting risks and vulnerabilities that will affect clients outcomes.
- Learn how to manage volatility in portfolios by preparing for shocks.
As ever there is a packed agenda, featuring keynote speakers, fund management sessions, and the usual fantastic opportunities to share knowledge with peers.
Our speaker line-up begins with David McWilliams, the co-founder of the world’s only economics and stand-up comedy festival, who will be taking us through the economic issues advisers need to think about when they make investment decisions. Then we have journalist and author Dan McCrum, who will tell us how he exposed the Wirecard fraud, challenging the many investors who backed the company. Thursday evening will see Hugo Rifkind offering some bare-knuckle humor on what is currently political. On Friday morning we have Jenny Radcliffe, who has the fascinating job of exposing companies’ vulnerabilities.

David McWilliams
David McWilliams is an economist, author, journalist, documentary-maker and broadcaster. He is Adjunct Professor of Global Economics at the School of Business Trinity College Dublin. David is ranked 10th most influential economist in the world.
He has devoted his entire professional life to the objective of making economics as widely available and easily understandable on as many platforms and to as many people as possible –and is having a laugh doing it.

Dan McCrum
Dan McCrum is multi-award winning journalist and author. In 15 years at the Financial Times he has covered business and finance from New York and London, helping to uncover fraudulent accounting at several listed companies. He is currently a member of the investigations team, and his reporting on Wirecard was recognised with more than a dozen awards and prizes, including journalist of the year at the 2020 British Press Awards. Dan got a taste for newsprint as a paperboy in his family’s newsagent. Before becoming a journalist he tried his hand at painting and decorating, selling cook books door-to-door, and learned a thing or two about finance in the research department of an investment bank

Hugo Rifkind
Hugo Rifkind is a columnist and leader writer for The Times. He writes a weekly opinion column, and My Week - a diary parody. He also writes columns for The Spectator and GQ. He has written for The Herald (in his native Scotland), the Evening Standard, and the Daily Mail. He hosts a weekly show on Times Radio - an entertaining talk show with guests on news and culture. He is also a regular panellist on Radio 4's satirical show, The News Quiz, and is an occasional speaker on TV shows such as Question Time.
Hugo started his journalistic career in celebrity gossip, and after a stint at a 'showbiz' website he first joined The Times on the paper's gossip diary. This informed his first novel, Overexposure, based around a showbiz reporter.
Hugo is an accomplished after dinner speaker and moderator. His specialisms include current affairs, foreign politics, culture, books and literary events, technology, and social media.

Jenny Radcliffe
Jenny Radcliffe is a social engineer and security expert. She focuses on the human elements that are so often exploited by those seeking to gain unauthorised access online and in the real world. Branded a ‘people hacker’, as well as bypassing the strictest security she can diffuse a crisis and spot a lie in seconds.
Having established a career in supply chain and procurement in industrial manufacturers, Jenny also trained staff in negotiation. At the same time she had a personal interest in how people were duped or manipulated into revealing confidential information or permitting access - known as social engineering. She was then approached by a bank to test their security – to see if she could talk her way in. It was the start of a new career exploring the human frailties in security systems. Since then she has ‘broken into’ over 650 locations, everything from building sites to the Tower of London, without ever picking a lock or faking a security pass.

Diversify for higher income
Most investors will broadly understand the benefits of diversification in terms of reducing risk by combining assets with different attributes – but it can also be a key part of generating a consistent income from a bond portfolio.
Capital Group’s Global High Income Opportunities Fund has a long track record of unlocking higher income from bonds via two routes: diversification by country and by asset class within fixed income. In this session, we discuss current opportunities across the full bond spectrum and ask the question - Are bonds in approaching a sweet spot?
Workshop Objective:
• Address front-of-mind client concerns such as recession and inflation
• How income can be a key driver of total returns
• Finding the best of emerging market debt and high yield bonds in a single solution
Company Profile: Capital Group is one of the oldest and largest asset management companies in the world, managing multi-asset, equity and fixed income investment strategies for different types of investors.
Since 1931, Capital Group has been singularly focused on delivering superior, consistent results for long-term investors using high-conviction portfolios, rigorous research and individual accountability. Today Capital Group works with financial intermediaries and institutions to manage more than US$2.31 trillion in long-term assets for investors around the world.

With the days of negative rates and benign inflation in developed markets behind us, the growth momentum tailwind for sustainable investing is no more. A different approach is needed to navigate the new market environment. Balancing the Blend
2022 was a difficult year in the industry – bonds didn’t diversify stocks and many multi-asset funds didn’t diversify one another. If one lesson was learnt off the back of this, it was that name diversification does not equal fundamental diversification. In this presentation, we highlight the importance of true fundamental diversification against the backdrop of the value versus growth cycle, the importance of rebalancing, and how a well-diversified, regularly rebalanced portfolio can improve outcomes in the decumulation phase.
Workshop Objective: To highlight the importance of true fundamental diversification against the backdrop of the value versus growth cycle, the importance of rebalancing, and how a well-diversified, regularly rebalanced portfolio can improve outcomes in the decumulation phase.

Is Value dead or just resting? Revisiting Systematic Investing with a Fundamental Lens
Investors have long been familiar with empirical studies that show value performing over time, such as those by Eugene Fama and Kenneth French. However, this was not the case in the 2010s as value lagged significantly behind growth. Avantis Investors, a part of American Century, believe that answers to questions about the efficacy of value can be found by drawing on the last 30 years of academic research. Join Richard Adams, Senior Investment Director, to look at more complete definitions of value that incorporate the latest financial research. Richard will share a modern approach to systematic investing that offers the benefits of indexing, such as low cost and transparency, alongside advantages of active management such as higher expected returns.
Workshop Objective: Evaluate the historic performance of the value factor, explore more complete definitions of value, and look at practical implementation in low-cost active, systematic strategies.

When will the mood music change?
2023 has seen economic data continue to confound forecasters. Activity data has remained more robust than expected, inflation has generally proved stickier than had been anticipated (particularly here in the UK) and employment has remained remarkedly resilient. We explore our expectations for how the economy and markets will evolve and where we believe the attractive opportunities are within fixed income to take advantage of these views. In addition, we explore the benefits of a strategic bond fund in an environment where we have seen markets move rapidly and economic data consistently come in significantly different to consensus estimates.
Workshop Objective: Understand the current environment for bond investors and how a strategic bond fund can take advantage of the opportunities it presents.
