Citywire Impact Retreat 2023
We are delighted to announce the return of the Citywire Impact Retreat. After a hugely successful launch in 2022, we will once again bring together sustainability thought leaders from the world of portfolio management and fund selection. This retreat will highlight ESG considerations, positive impact and all things sustainability within the context of both portfolio management and the world at large.
This is your invitation to join us on 3-4 May at the Four Seasons Hotel, Hampshire for one of the most anticipated retreats of the year, during which we will delve into the challenges that we as an industry face in creating a financial system that works for all stakeholders, including people and planet.
As with all our residential retreats, there is no charge for attending (which is strictly by invitation only) and you will earn up to 8 hours of structured CPD.
We will gather together drivers of positive change for a programme that will feature our usual line-up of keynote speakers, workshop sessions with leading fund managers in the space and, of course, the opportunity to network with trailblazing peers.
Over the course of this event, you will;
- Reassess portfolios in relation to both ESG risk and opportunities to create a positive social and environmental impact.
- Explore the economics of climate change, and how to identify the key policy trends that shape energy markets.
- Develop the necessary skills to foster a more inclusive working environment, within the context of social mobility.
Our speaker line-up includes:
- Kicking things off will be Professor Trevor Williams, former chief economist at Lloyds Bank. He will provide expert insight into the economics of climate change and energy, and the key policy trends that shape markets. A well-known and highly-regarded speaker on the economy of tomorrow, Williams will cover a multitude of critical themes, including demographics, globalisation and data.
- In the afternoon we’ll be joined by Hashi Mohamed. After arriving in England as an unaccompanied refugee at just nine years old, Mohamed overcame the odds to become a barrister, broadcaster, journalist and author. He will get under the bonnet of what he calls ‘society’s most intractable problem’ - social mobility. Considerations will include how to foster a more inclusive working environment, and the suitability of quota systems.
- On Thursday morning we will hear from Dr Sarah Beynon. Beynon is the founder of Dr Beynon’s Bug Farm, an innovative research centre and home to the UK’s first edible insect restaurant. Holder of a doctorate in entomology, Beynon will provide valuable insight into the future of human consumption. Her work has been featured regularly in the media, including a prime time BBC One documentary.
We anticipate a retreat as lively and enjoyable as it is meaningful, and we can't wait to get together and continue the work of forging a fairer path.
See you there!
With best wishes,

Trevor Williams
Trevor Williams is an economist who previously served as Chief Economist at Lloyds Bank for over a decade. From energy and climate to how companies use data, he analyses the key trends and policies that shape markets and brings clarity and cutting edge thinking to the economic overviews.
Prior to his time at Lloyds, Trevor worked for the civil service. He then went on to work as an economist in the City for over thirty years, covering specialities including equity and foreign exchange, forecasting and financial analysis. Since, he rotates as the Chair of the Institute of Economic Affairs’ Shadow Monetary Policy Committee where he keeps a close eye on the Bank of England’s decisions and direction of travel.
Trevor looks at the economics of climate change and energy, examining the risks for investors, insurers and individuals from the cost to businesses and consumers to the potential effects of energy shortages. He reveals how companies can use their own big data sets to reveal insights into their place within the wider economy. On a broader level, he provides insight into how politics, demographics and trade shape the economy.

Hashi Mohamed
Hashi Mohamed is a barrister, broadcaster and journalist. He is also the author of People Like Us: What it Takes to Make it in Modern Britain in which he draws on his own experiences to examine the issue of social mobility in Britain.
Born in Kenya as one of 12 siblings, Hashi arrived in England as an unaccompanied child refugee following the death of his father in a car accident. Raised solely on state benefits and educated at a struggling comprehensive, he went on to study French and Law at the University of Hertfordshire, and eventually completed a postgraduate degree at Oxford University. He was subsequently called to the Bar and became a lawyer at No5 Chambers, specialising in planning and environmental law.
Hashi considers what he calls ‘society’s most intractable problem’ - the issue of social mobility: “We live in a society where the single greatest indicator of what your job will be is the job of your parents”. He explores what policymakers, businesses, and educators can do to bring about meaningful change in the areas of social mobility, diversity and inclusion. Drawing on his own story of overcoming improbable odds, he offers lessons in resilience, goal-setting and mindset, and outlines how the power of imagination can be used to unlock potential.

Dr Sarah Beynon
Dr Sarah Beynon is an academic entomologist, ecologist and farmer and the founder of The Bug Farm, Bug Farm Foods Ltd and Dung Beetles Direct.
Sarah’s fascination in the natural world was nurtured through her childhood but her interest in insects was cemented during her undergraduate years at The University of Oxford. After university, Sarah set up an environmental consultancy business, working with farmers and conservation organisations to deliver advice on habitat management for invertebrates. During the course of her research, she has travelled to Zambia, Bolivia, Brazil, America and Honduras.
Sarah is also passionate about education and the dissemination of her research so returned to Pembrokeshire to start-up Dr Beynon’s Bug Farm. Now, she works as a scientist and ecological consultant, but also with the public and farmers to enthuse people about insects and make sure that her research is delivered where it is needed – to the farmers and policy-makers.
Sarah also enjoys TV work and has presented for, amongst others, BBC, Channel 4, Discovery Channel, Channel 5 and Animal Planet.

Growth investing for a sustainable world
Sustainable in both senses of the word – enduring growth and enduring good. That’s a noble aim against a backdrop of broken ESG investing - where backwards-looking, box-ticking approaches pervade, and broken growth investing - where innovation is dead and value is back in vogue. But that aim is indeed achievable for those that take a wide angle lens on sustainability. Portfolio Manager Toby Ross will discuss how the Baillie Gifford Sustainable Growth Fund harnesses powerful positive feedback loops to drive meaningful outperformance over the long term.
Workshop Objective:
1. What is the single best predictor of long term share price outperformance?
2. How can we reframe our thinking to see sustainable investing as a world of opportunities, rather than a downside protection strategy?
3. Can a business be impactful not just through its products or services, but its business practices too?
Company Profile: Baillie Gifford’s sole business is investment management. Since the company was founded in 1908 it has been a partnership. Today it is owned by 51 partners all of whom work in the business.
We currently manage or advise some £227.5bn on behalf of clients worldwide.

Time to consider an allocation to Sustainable Infrastructure?
Tommy Kristofferson, Fund Manager of the EdenTree Green Infrastructure Fund discusses the case for sustainable infrastructure and why now is a great time to invest in this $10 trillion global opportunity.
Tommy will also discuss how infrastructure is a genuine third asset class, providing diversification against inflationary headwinds and ongoing market uncertainty by investing in alternative sources of growth and income.
Given no two companies are the same, we believe the best way to access this market is to invest in a diversified and balanced portfolio of innovative companies providing solutions with positive environmental outcomes.
Workshop Objective: To provide an introduction to sustainable infrastructure and why investing in a diversified and balanced portfolio can help mitigate inflationary headwinds by investing in alternative sources of growth and income.

Impact and Innovation: how the Impact Case is the Investment Case
The most successful companies in history have been those that have devised innovative solutions to real-world problems. It is undoubted that the UN SDGs represent some of the biggest challenges we face today, and the ability to back solutions to these environmental and social challenges creates enormous opportunity. Using the SDGs as a framework, we’ve built our taxonomy to help us identify scarcely owned listed companies that are bringing innovative solutions to the market. The result is an equity portfolio that is differentiated but complementary to broader global equity portfolios and an impact case to meet the modern definition of the term. For us, the impact case is the investment case.
Workshop Objective: Understand how the intersection of impact, innovation and mispriced growth creates a diversified and sustainable portfolio.

Earning a dual return in EMD: attractive sustainable and financial returns
We dispel the myth that Impact and ESG are at odds with EMD investing. We believe EM investments can drive sustainable outcomes without compromising financial returns. Select EM issuers continue to impress in their progress toward deeper considerations of ESG factors. Through engagement with issuers on structuring impact bonds and advocating for improvement in material E, S and G factors, we can achieve attractive risk-adjusted returns while promoting positive environmental/societal outcomes.
Workshop Objective: Directing capital towards EM debt offers an exceptional opportunity to achieve positive ESG outcomes without compromising on financial objectives. Join us to see how Nuveen’s proprietary Impact and EM ESG frameworks allow investors to capture competitive returns while driving sustainable outcomes.

Investing in the transition to a sustainable future; an innovative and pragmatic approach.
Are best-in-class, positive impact and do-no-harm strategies enough to achieve the transition to the sustainable future targeted by the UN SDGs? In her presentation, Yuko Takano - Co-Lead Investment Manager of the new Pictet-Positive Change strategy - discusses why they aren’t.
The world needs to transition from the old economy to the more sustainable and equitable future targeted by the UN SDGs. It will be challenging and complex but there will be opportunities for companies and investors along the way.
