Citywire  Midlands  Retreat 2026

Welcome to the Citywire Midlands Retreat, taking place at The Belfry, Sutton Coldfield from the 11 - 12 June.

This Retreat brings together the region’s key figures in investment management and manager research, for a noon-to-noon of keynote speakers, workshop sessions with leading fund managers, and plenty of opportunities to connect with your peers.

Thursday will kick off with a fireside chat with former Secretary of State for Defence and Minister for the Armed Forces, Penny Mordaunt. Hosted by Citywire’s Steven Chatterton, this  discussion will give you the opportunity to put your questions directly to Mordaunt as global instability forces governments across Europe to direct increased resources towards defence, reshaping policy priorities and influencing economic decision making.

On Thursday evening we will be joined by Steven Swinford, political editor of The Times. Widely respected for his insight into Westminster, Swinford was shortlisted for Political Reporter of the Year three years running. Drawing on his close access to the heart of government, he will offer a behind-the-scenes glimpse into political power.

On our final morning, we’ll hear from Graham Short, a Birmingham-based micro-artist whose craft pushes the limits of human skill and endurance. Internationally recognised for creating some of the world’s smallest engravings, his work has attracted global media attention, inspired documentaries, and earned invitations to prestigious exhibitions.

As with all of our retreats, attendance is strictly by invitation only and delegates participating in the accredited Midlands Retreat can claim up to 6 CPD hours towards the CII / Personal Finance Society member CPD scheme.

By the end of the event, you will be able to…

  • Critically evaluate the potential benefits and limitations of different investment strategies across a range of asset classes.
  • Describe the political and economic implications of increased defence spending.
  • Recognise how disciplined precision and resilience can drive performance.

On behalf of the entire Citywire team, we would be delighted to welcome you to the Belfry.

Best wishes,

George and Steven

Penny Mordaunt

Keynote Speaker

Penny Mordaunt

Former Defence Secretary, UK Government

Penny Mordaunt was an MP for 14 years, during which time she held nine ministerial roles - four of those being in Cabinet. She was the first (and only) woman to hold the roles of Secretary of State for Defence and Minister for the Armed Forces. She also held the role of Paymaster General, where she became the UK government’s first cross-government defensive cyber lead, and led the rebuild of the UK’s civil contingencies and resilience strategy.

Penny also held the role of Secretary of State for International Development, working with UN  agencies and international organisations, as well as being the UK’s representative at the World Bank. In her role as Trade Minister, she brokered new trade deals, including overseeing the UK’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. She also established economic agreements with individual US states in lieu of a US deal - a move that saw her undertaking the longest tour of the US of any Minister since Churchill. She was also on the Withdrawal Agreement Joint Committee overseeing the UK’s exit from the EU. She has held other roles in local government, work, health, pensions and disability.
Steven Swinford

Keynote Speaker

Steven Swinford

Political Editor, The Times

Steven Swinford is the award-winning Political Editor at The Times. He has led the paper's coverage during one of the most extraordinary periods in British politics, including the Covid pandemic, four Tory prime ministers in the space of four years, Labour's landslide victory and Sir Keir Starmer's current travails. He has established a reputation for providing the inside track on what is really happening in government, including scoops on successive budgets and fiscal events, the defining Cabinet clashes and the development and execution of flagship policies.

He will give insight on what to expect - Sir Keir Starmer's battle against the cost of living, as his popularity continues to plummet, the rise of Reform and Nigel Farage, and the Conservative Party's attempts to redefine themselves in opposition. And perhaps, above all, how Labour and Number 10 will attempt to deal with that most unpredictable of factors - Donald Trump.
Graham Short

Keynote Speaker

Graham Short

Micro Artist

Graham Short is the world’s number-one micro artist. The only man on the planet who can engrave, by hand, lettering smaller than a red human blood cell which can only be viewed under a powerful microscope. He has spent over half a century honing his craft, going to both physical and mental extremes to produce some of the highest-quality engravings ever seen.

Graham is now considered one of the most talented artists in the world. He says of this, “Of course I don’t believe it, but as a thick Brummie, who failed on a massive scale, leaving school at the age of 15 with no qualifications and just a girl’s bike, which I’d nicked from the bike sheds, I’m sure you’ll understand, when I say it makes me feel good to hear these compliments.”

Fundamentals First: Unlocking Discounted Opportunities in an Unstable World

AVI will review how fundamental analysis can help investors uncover market inefficiencies and identify opportunities that others may overlook. At its core, fundamental analysis is about asking a simple question: what is this business or asset really worth? That means going beyond the share price and looking at earnings power, balance sheet strength, cash flow, governance, and the quality of management. Sometimes good assets are temporarily misunderstood, ignored, or affected by short-term noise, which can create attractive entry points for patient investors. The share price reflects what the market is willing to pay today, while fundamental analysis asks what the asset is actually worth over time and the best opportunities often appear when those two things diverge.

Workshop Objectives: Examine how fundamental analysis can help exploit market inefficiencies and uncover discounted opportunities

Company Profile:  Asset Value Investors (AVI) was established in 1985 to take over the management of one of the oldest listed investment companies in London.

We are an independent, majority employee-owned boutique value investment manager with a fundamental, bottom-up, engagement-focused style. This last part is key: engagement lies at the heart of what we do, and is what makes our idiosyncratic approach so distinctive.

We manage three distinct equity investment strategies: Global, Japan, and Closed-End Funds, including our headline AVI Global Trust plc, AVI Japan Opportunity Trust plc and MIGO Opportunities Trust plc

Our aim is to be a constructive, stable partner and to bring our expertise – garnered over four decades of investing – to realise value, thus generating long-term results.

UK Equities: Income Today, Opportunity Tomorrow

UK large cap equities have long been home to dependable, dividend paying companies, with the FTSE All Share yielding over 3% in recent years.

Crucially, the opportunity extends beyond yield alone. Over the past five years, the FTSE All Share has delivered double digit annual total returns, yet the market remains consistently underestimated.

Today, UK equities combine attractive income, compelling valuations and strong fundamentals, supported by favourable conditions for long term returns.

Workshop Objectives: Delegates will examine potential prospects for the UK equities market, considering both yield and total return.

Company Profile: ClearBridge Investments is an active equity manager offering a broad range of strategies across global developed and emerging markets, local markets, and real assets. Our local market capabilities serve clients in the U.S., U.K., Canada and Australia. The firm manages more than $210 billion (as of December 31, 2025).

ClearBridge manages diversified, high-conviction portfolios through collaborative fundamental research to meet the needs of some of the world’s largest asset owners and financial intermediary platforms. We invest as long-term, risk-aware business owners and seek to deliver consistency of process and performance for our clients through market cycles. A focus on durability drives everything we do; from the business models of the companies we own, to the holding periods of our portfolios, to the stability and longevity of our investment professionals.
As Franklin Templeton’s largest equity specialist, ClearBridge operates with investment autonomy from headquarters in New York and offices in Baltimore, Calgary, Edinburgh, Fort Lauderdale, Leeds, London, Melbourne, and Sydney.
