Citywire Cape Town Forum 2023
Citywire is looking forward to hosting its second annual in-person forum in Cape Town this year – a unique opportunity for select members of South Africa’s fund- selector community.
The half-day forum will be held on 25 October at the Mount Nelson A Belmond Hotel, where a small group of delegates will engage with portfolio managers in small workshops. This offers the opportunity to gain detailed insights and engage in debate.
Attendance is limited to ensure high-quality discussions and meaningful opportunities for delegates to network over breakfast and lunch.
Award-winning journalist Bruce Whitfield will deliver the keynote address to delegates, entitled: 'How to get lucky: where strategy, opportunism and grit collide’. He will share the critical lessons he has distilled from analysing successful global businesses for more than two decades. It is an antidote to the prevailing negative sentiment afflicting many economies around the world, as fears of recession and stagflation undermine leaders’ ability to shape their growth strategies for the future.
With best wishes,

Innovation in a new world order
The last decade was an exceptional environment for growth investing. Waves of disruptive innovation swept through huge areas of the economy. Companies driving this change scaled at an unprecedented pace, dislodging incumbents and creating huge amounts of value for shareholders. However, the market environment which proved so supportive for these disruptive innovators has changed significantly. So what’s next? The opportunity to benefit from investing in innovative companies has always been much broader than the headline-grabbing disruptors. Sustaining innovations can deepen and extend competitive advantage, while business model innovations can enable companies to grab market share, for instance. The presentation will explore the diversity of different sorts of innovation and how growth investors can benefit from these opportunities even in a very different market environment to the last decade.
Workshop objectives:
- How are the opportunities for growth investors evolving
- Redefining innovation to capture the full range of opportunities
- Will the big winners of the last decade continue their outperformance?

The mega trends driving listed real assets
In today’s dynamic investment landscape, listed real assets are gaining prominence, driven by four mega trends. These trends are shaping the future of real estate investments: ageing population, generation rent, urbanisation, and digitalisation.
Ageing population: The UK’s demographic has shifted towards older populations which is driving demand for healthcare facilities, residential care, and GP surgeries.
Generation rent: This is the fastest growing mega trend in the UK real estate market, with strong rental growth. This has been evident amongst purpose-built student accommodation.
Urbanisation: As cities continue to grow, investments in commercial properties like offices are on this rise, fuelled by the concentration of economic activity in urban cities.
Digitalisation: We’re in the midst of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, with the digitalisation of society shaping how we live, work, and play.
Workshop Objective: How do specialist, best-in-class REITs benefit from the four mega trends that are driving next generation real estate.
Company Profile: The Gravis approach to fund management is perfectly depicted by the company’s tortoise logo: slow, steady, and consistent. We specialise in Funds that do something a little different, providing investors with exposure to the more stable and predictable side of many of today’s exciting themes, resulting in reliable, long-term income from alternative sectors.

Value: Dead or Alive?
The value style has significantly outperformed the growth style for close to a century. Over the past 15 years, however, value has markedly underperformed growth strategies. This, as central banks unleashed wave upon wave of unconventional monetary policies to fight deflation. As a result, many value managers have seen their AUM dwindle and some even closed their businesses. Many believed that value’s obituary has been written. Now though, structurally higher inflation has forced central banks to raise rates and unwind their balance sheets. With cost of capital, once again, becoming critical in capital allocation decisions, value’s resurrection might be in the offing.
Integrity Asset Management employs a true value investment philosophy, despite relentless pressure over the years from the market to deviate. Our solutions are well-placed to benefit investors against this backdrop.
Workshop Objective:
- To place the value style and its performance progression against the growth style over the past century in the correct perspective.
- Introduce Integrity Asset Management as a true value manager and true boutique to attendees.
- Offer insight into Integrity Asset Management’s investment thinking and solutions.
Company Profile: Integrity Asset Management is an owner managed, boutique asset management company specialising in unique, tailor-made solutions for private and institutional clients. As such, we invest in long-term relationships with our clients through exceptional, personalised service and long-term value creation.
Our investment team follows a value investment philosophy and process to identify undervalued assets with above-average risk-adjusted return prospects. Cognisance is also taken of worldwide economic, sector and investment trends to tilt the portfolio towards attractive sectors and companies.
Integrity is a concept of consistency of actions, values, methods, measures, principles, expectations and outcomes. We believe that integrity should be integral to one’s actions both in the business world and life in general.

Value investing; old style, new tricks?
After its toughest decade in history, many questioned whether value investing was still alive. After a more prolonged period of performance, Ben Arnold discusses if we are returning to a heyday for cheap stocks. We also discuss how you can implement a style which started in the 1920s while employing a state-of-the-art bottom-up investment process harnessing 21st century data science over and above the value premium.
Workshop Objective: To understand the history of value investing performance, what has driven its recent resurgence and how a bottom-up investment process rooted in fundamental analysis can harness big data to deliver better investment outcomes

Growth investing for a sustainable world
Sustainable in both senses of the word – enduring growth and enduring good. That’s a noble aim against a backdrop of broken ESG investing - where backwards-looking, box-ticking approaches pervade, and broken growth investing - where innovation is dead and value is back in vogue. But that aim is indeed achievable for those that take a wide angle lens on sustainability. Portfolio Manager Toby Ross will discuss how the Baillie Gifford Sustainable Growth Fund harnesses powerful positive feedback loops to drive meaningful outperformance over the long term.
Workshop Objective:
1. What is the single best predictor of long term share price outperformance?
2. How can we reframe our thinking to see sustainable investing as a world of opportunities, rather than a downside protection strategy?
3. Can a business be impactful not just through its products or services, but its business practices too?
Company Profile: Baillie Gifford’s sole business is investment management. Since the company was founded in 1908 it has been a partnership. Today it is owned by 51 partners all of whom work in the business.
We currently manage or advise some £227.5bn on behalf of clients worldwide.

Time to consider an allocation to Sustainable Infrastructure?
Tommy Kristofferson, Fund Manager of the EdenTree Green Infrastructure Fund discusses the case for sustainable infrastructure and why now is a great time to invest in this $10 trillion global opportunity.
Tommy will also discuss how infrastructure is a genuine third asset class, providing diversification against inflationary headwinds and ongoing market uncertainty by investing in alternative sources of growth and income.
Given no two companies are the same, we believe the best way to access this market is to invest in a diversified and balanced portfolio of innovative companies providing solutions with positive environmental outcomes.
Workshop Objective: To provide an introduction to sustainable infrastructure and why investing in a diversified and balanced portfolio can help mitigate inflationary headwinds by investing in alternative sources of growth and income.
Company Profile: EdenTree is a responsible and sustainable investment manager with a strong heritage of delivering Performance with Principles. We serve the financial adviser community across the entirety of the UK, with dedicated regional sales directors providing exceptional levels of client support. We have been continuously recognised for the strength of our proposition, being awarded the title of ‘Best Ethical Investment Provider’ at the Moneyfacts Life & Pensions Awards for 14 consecutive years (2009-2022).
