Welcome to Citywire Berlin 2025
Following a blockbuster turnout last year, our flagship 2025 European retreat promises more of the same with three days of packed discussions, workshops, networking and thought-provoking speaker sessions.
The Economic Policy Uncertainty (EPU) index has surged to its highest level this century, fuelled by escalating tariff disputes, rising geopolitical instability, including renewed tensions in the Middle East, and growing fears of a potential “Trumprecession”. Adding to the uncertainty, rising public debt, particularly across Western economies, has become an increasing source of concern placing increasing strain on financial markets. In this age of chaos there is no better place than our Citywire Berlin to discuss the challenges and opportunities created by this evolving landscape, and to gain firsthand insights from hundreds of European selectors and over 30 leading fund managers.
As always, our event will be held in the beautiful setting of the Adlon, right next to the iconic Brandenburg Gate. A symbol of reunification and a major landmark offering a glimpse into Berlin's complex past.
But that’s not all! Again, this year, investment professionals from across Europe are voting for Europe’s most influential fund selectors. The winners will be voted by their fund selector peers and represent Benelux, Germany, Italy, Nordics, Spain, Switzerland, UK and Rest of Europe, and will be revealed in Berlin.
Citywire Berlin has been a fixture in the calendar since 2009, and we’re totally committed to keeping it that way. We know the fund selection community needs not just the opportunity to catch up with the managers they already know and trust, but also the chance to meet new managers, explore new ideas and, crucially, network with their peers.
Welcome to Citywire Berlin, since 2009 the BEST and BIGGEST gathering of this kind in Europe!
The registrations for this event are now closed, if you are interested please get in touch with EuroResearchTeam@citywire.co.uk and we will get back to you if a place becomes available.

The underappreciated power of short dated fixed income
In today’s volatile world, investors are searching for stability. With persistent downside risks from tariffs, geopolitics and economic uncertainty, the demand for resilient yield and reliable income is growing.
Our Global Credit fund manager will explain how accessing high quality ultra short dated credit can be a compelling alternative to cash – offering liquidity, price stability and enhanced yield. Over the past 28 years, 1-3yr Global credit has delivered positive returns in 25 calendar years, delivering a far superior risk-adjusted return versus the broader all-maturity index.
At Aberdeen, we take a global approach to short-dated credit, seeking high-quality IG issuers across developed and emerging markets, including Asia. To further enhance yield, we selectively add global high-yield names and lower-rated IG bonds – all within a tightly risk-managed framework.
The result? A low-volatility, yield-enhancing ‘step out of cash’ alternative that combines stability, access and global diversification.
Workshop Objectives: Setting the macro environment in context for short-dated fixed income
Understanding the attractive risk-adjusted returns from short dated credit historically.
How can ultra-short dated credit be used as a step out of cash solution
Understand how Aberdeen’ outcome focused approach differ from peers

Japan in 2026: an alignment of stars?
Japan’s equity story is entering a new chapter. The early gains—such as ROE improvements via buybacks and enhanced shareholder returns—are now largely priced in. The next phase will be driven by earnings growth through strategic portfolio restructuring, a more complex but necessary step. Rising awareness of capital efficiency among management, combined with mounting pressure from shareholders and activists, is fueling a wave of divestment, privatization, merger, and consolidation aimed at improving ROIC. Japanese corporates are embracing this unprecedented challenge. As inefficiencies are addressed, the overlooked mid-cap space could see a strong resurgence.
Workshop Objectives: A crash course on changing Japanese equity story

Asia ex-Japan: After the recent (and unusual) outperformance of Korea and China, where are the opportunities now?
Asia ex-Japan comprises four main countries: China, Korea, Taiwan and India. China and Korea have been laggards over the last decade. China, because of its deteriorating relationship with the West and more recently from weak consumer sentiment resulting from the deflation of its property bubble. Korea, because of poor corporate governance. Both these countries, for the first time in years, have begun to outperform in 2025. What does this mean for contrarian investors, such as us? Where are the opportunities in Asia now following the recent outperformance of previous laggards? Join us to discuss where we see the opportunities going forward.
Workshop Objectives:
Explore the next chapter for Asian markets, considering where growth and value may emerge – and how our unconstrained approach helps uncover overlooked opportunities.

Celebrating our 25th anniversary: Our tried and tested differentiated approach to investing in European HY
Andrei and James have managed the strategy for years with a focus on downside protection very successfully, outperforming the index and peers with first decile rankings over most standard periods. While many peers tend to prefer a currency-approach, investing only in EUR-denominated corporate bonds, we prefer a European domicile-approach, additionally investing in USD and GBP bonds (all hedged back to EUR). This approach does not only increase our universe but also provides yield pick-up and is a better reflection of European risk. The majority of the long-term alpha is being driven by credit selection and allocation, keeping duration levels very close to our index.
Workshop Objectives: Discover how our strategy differs from competitors and how the team was able to generate compelling risk-adjusted returns since tenure, navigating several crises. Also, we will discuss why it makes sense to add to the asset class in the current environment.

Investing in CLOs – why now and why with an active ETF
The higher yield and defensive income profile of floating rate investments like CLOs has attracted asset allocators looking to improve portfolio diversification.
Looking at European AAA CLOs versus Euro IG credit, investor can access better yield, better credit quality and compelling relative value.

Active management can help to significantly reduce volatility and maximum drawdowns – resulting in maximisation of the income per unit of risk without leaving yield on the table.

Breaking Concentration: The Emerging Market Growth Opportunity

Workshop Objectives:
- Explore how dollar cycles impact emerging markets equities, and why a weaker dollar tends to support emerging markets performance.
- Discuss Brazil’s potential for stimulus and what it could mean for broader emerging markets sentiment.
- Understand emerging markets equities as a hedge against US growth stocks, and how to spot mispricing in markets like South Africa and Mexico.

From the start we understood the need to create a distinct, entrepreneurial culture that harnessed all areas of the business in the pursuit of this goal. As a new entrant in a competitive market, we wanted our clients to experience, share and benefit from the energy and focus of a young firm, full of talented individuals, eager to distinguish itself as a trusted steward of other people’s money.
Now, 40 years on, we have established ourselves as a leading specialist asset manager precisely because we have retained that agility and drive as we have grown. Our value remains in our people, our ability to adapt quickly to changing markets, and in our willingness to continuously challenge ourselves to deliver the best investment outcome for clients.

The case for active investing in emerging market equities
With investor interest in EM equities on the rise, the question is how best to capture the opportunity. These markets are inefficient, characterised by low analyst coverage, fragmented governance and liquidity gaps - all of which create opportunities for skilled stock-pickers.

Active by design: unlocking opportunities in high-quality rates markets

These asset classes provide structural safety, liquidity, and regulatory support, creating a resilient foundation for generating the low-risk returns clients need. A differentiating Income solution in EUR using liquid EMD assets, and designed for EUR-based investors
Eurozone investors remain in need for income, yet most of the usual solutions in EUR often appear crowded, tightly valued and offering limited differentiation or liquidity.
The 5-year old Principal-Finisterre’s EMD Euro Income strategy aims to bring something new to the table, as an all-in diversifying income proposal in EUR, addressing hedging costs and currency issues, to generate a resilient, low volatility income stream.
The Finisterre team uses the diversity of EM sovereign and corporate credits in EUR and USD, as well as high income local debt, to construct a high conviction portfolio focused on income maximization in EUR, with limited volatility.

Diversify Beyond the Index: Let Robeco Challenge Your Equity Risk
In today’s equity markets, diversification has become an illusion. Global indices are now dominated by a handful of U.S. mega-cap stocks, leaving investors exposed to concentration, valuation, and currency risks. Passive investing, once considered safe, has quietly become a high-risk strategy.
In this session, Pim van Vliet illustrates why passive investing is no longer low risk and how Robeco’s Conservative Equities strategy offers a proven, systematic alternative. Since its launch in 2006, the strategy has achieved >30% lower drawdowns and delivered steady, above-market returns across multiple market cycles.
Workshop Objectives: Participants will learn how to diversify beyond the index, reduce portfolio volatility, and regain balance through style diversification and broader regional exposure, including Europe and emerging markets. Anchored in Robeco’s philosophy of High Returns from Low Risk, the Conservative strategy shows how disciplined risk control and behavioral insights can turn defense into a sustainable advantage.
Company Profile: Robeco is a pure-play international asset manager founded in 1929 with headquarters in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and 15 offices worldwide. A global leader in sustainable investing since 1995, its integration of sustainable as well as fundamental and quantitative research enables the company to offer institutional and private investors an extensive selection of active investment strategies, for a broad range of asset classes. On 31 December 2024, Robeco had EUR 214 billion in assets under management, of which EUR 209 billion is committed to ESG integration. More information is available at www.robeco.com.

Seeking consistent long-term returns in uncertain markets

EM Debt Is Back!
Global investors are showing renewed interest in Emerging Markets Debt after years of under-investment. Following three years of strong gains, EM debt has proven remarkably resilient despite global disruptions. Key EM countries have completed significant macroeconomic adjustments, including inflation control, strengthened balance of payments, and sustainable debt dynamics - often contrasting with developed markets.
Expected returns remain compelling: real rates on EM local bonds are historically high, while hard currency debt offers attractive income. The US dollar's downturn and Federal Reserve easing could provide powerful tailwinds. Lower European rates have limited traditional income opportunities, directing attention toward Emerging Markets. For global allocators, diversification from challenged developed market bonds has rarely been stronger, positioning EM debt for greater portfolio prominence.

Out of favour, not out of potential: Why cyclical small caps deserve a second look
Momentum continues to dominate global equity markets. Investors are crowding into last year’s winners, while cyclical small caps remain overlooked. Yet history shows that these sectors often lead in early recovery phases. The current environment may feel uncertain, but that is often when contrarian opportunities emerge.
Valuations in cyclical small caps are at multi-year lows. Macro catalysts such as rate cuts, fiscal stimulus and a return of consumer confidence could unlock performance. For the Van Lanschot Kempen Small-Cap team, who’s process leads them to look beyond the headlines, this provides multiple opportunities to reconsider what is being priced in and what is being missed.
Workshop Objectives:
To provide participants with insights and practical examples of Small-cap investing in today’s investment environment, and how our “quality at an attractive price” approach aims to uncover opportunities.
Company Profile:
Van Lanschot Kempen Investment Management NV is part of the Van Lanschot Kempen group, a listed company on Euronext AMX, with roots dating back to 1737.
We are active managers who bring free thinking, resolve and originality to investment decisions. This helps us to reach hard-to-access asset classes that are often missed by competitors. Placing considerable focus on active engagement we aim to unlock value in a sustainable way, guiding investors through the transition to a sustainable economy.
Van Lanschot Kempen Investment Management NV is licensed to manage UCITS and AIFs and is authorised to provide investment services under the supervision by the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets. This was a decision the terrified youngster could not understand at the time, yet today he recognises this decision as the best one they could have made in their quest to prepare their son for the real world.
Hein’s first school report is testimony to his adaptive nature and early sense of adventure stating that he ‘is on a constant journey of discovery’. His teenage years proved to be more challenging as he dealt with the normal pressures of growing up and also struggled with the question of why he had to be born blind. Not finding the answers he desperately needed made him rebellious and he subsequently made life difficult for those around him. It took a couple of extreme adventures to make Hein see the light. Today he sees his blindness as the biggest gift he could ever hope for.
Hein started his career as a switchboard operator, but the rapidly growing technology sector soon inspired him to enter the IT industry. He worked for companies such as MWeb and Thawte Consulting, where he quickly worked his way up to international sales manager, managing a team of sighted individuals. Hein’s unique experiences and out-look on life afforded him numerous invitations to share his story and in 2004 he decided to take up motivational speaking as a full-time career. His humorous approach to everything in life has illuminated the lighter side of living in darkness and resonates with audiences around the world. Whether he has his audience rolling with laughter or doing introspection, he aims to leave them with the realisation that they have the capacity to achieve anything they set their minds too.
In August 2014, Hein received an honorary Golden Key award from the University of Stellenbosch for his ongoing commitment to social upliftment. He is also the brand ambassador for Kaleidoscope, a non-profit organisation based in South Africa with the aim of supporting the blind to reach their full potential.
Hein Wagner is living proof that despite the challenges that come our way, anything is possible. He does not allow his blindness to stand in the way of his dreams and people often refer to him as the blind man with exceptional vision.
