Citywire Berlin 2023
Citywire is back in Berlin for our flagship fund selector event. Following a blockbuster turnout last year, our 2023 conference promises more of the same with three days of packed discussions, workshops and speaker sessions from key players in pan-European fund management.
The challenges raised over the past 12 months have shown little signs of slowing down and our annual event is designed to give you a chance to check-in with your peers and uncover some new investment thinking to better equip yourself for what lies ahead.
Kicking off the event is Guy Verhofstadt, a man at the forefront of political change in Europe. The former Prime Minister of Belgium and key part of the ‘Renew Europe’ project within the European Parliament, Guy will outline what the future of the European political and economic landscape really looks like from someone who has sat among the key decision makers.
Founder of the think tank Tempus, Aric Dromi will kick-off day two with his views on how governments and society need to re-examine and re-purpose every aspect of our social and financial interactions in the era of VR, AR and AI.
After lunch, Dr Tali Sharot, a UCL associate professor, will share her research into the functions of memory, how understanding the brain can help adjust mindsets and also the ways in which we can – and perhaps should – influence those around us.
In addition, Jonas Deichmann will share with us his compelling story of being the first person to complete a triathlon around the world, and what it takes to achieve such a feat. Currently on the second leg of his ‘Trans America Twice’ challenge, Jonas will be running straight to us in Berlin! You can track his progress online using the links in his speaker profile below.
Further details about the event will be released nearer the time. We look forward to seeing you on the ground in Germany later this year.

Speakers

Guy Verhofstadt
Guy Verhofstadt served for a decade as the leader of the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), the centrist-liberal grouping in the European parliament. He is also the former prime minister of Belgium, and has been charged with leading the EU’s negotiating team on the UK’s departure from the Union.
After studying law, Guy became a member of the Ghent City Council and quickly rose within the ranks of Belgium’s VLD party. He became an MP and then DeputyPrime Minister and Minister for the Budget whilst still in his 30s. After loosingpower, Guy took control of the party and reinvented it, making more attractive to representatives of other parties. After taking time away from politics, Guy returned as president of the VLD winning the general election and becoming the first liberal PM in over 60 years. Guy retained the office for eight years before becoming a Senator and then an MEP. Upon entering the European Parliament he took on the leadership of the main liberal grouping, the ALDE, a position he held for 10 years, during which time he also served as the Parliament's Brexit Coordinator.
Guy argues for reform to the EU so that it focuses much more on the key problems facing both Europe and the world - the economic crisis, crime, the disparity between rich and poor, and other key political issues. He also supports greater integration within the EU, building a stronger commercial and trading bloc, with a single currency, treasury and economic policy, creating more jobs, and competing with the US and the emerging Asian economies. He examines the mistakes of the past, the likely outcomes for the future, and why Europe can be a superpower if it escapes its history and embraces revolution.
Still an active MEP in ALDE successor group Renew Europe, Guy is a regular voice in media across the continent, He is also the author of a number of books on Europe including The United States of Europe, The New Age of Empires and Emerging from the Crisis: How Europe can Save the World.

Aric Dromi
Aric is a futurologist, social and technology strategist and esteemed keynote speaker. With a long and impressive career advising executives and policymakers on strategy and innovation, Aric is an expert on mobility, logistics, the future of urban structures and AI.
Drawing from his long career in choice architecture and systems design, innovation and futurology, Aric strongly believes in humanity's ability to adapt and overcome, which is essential in a world which he sees as being on the cusp of seismic changes (which we are not yet ready for).
Aric is thus helping many to work towards a more resilient societal model which enables a free market and a future for our children, by providing strategic advice to organisations, executives, policymakers and governments.
He is particularly interested in the next frontier of intelligence amplification in the era of VR, AR and AI.

Dr Tali Sharot
Tali Sharot is an academic, researcher and writer specialising in neuroscience as it relates to behaviour change, decision-making and how our minds are shaped by both the past and the future. She is an Associate Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience and Director of the Affective Brain Lab at University College London, and is also a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow.
Working principally at the intersection of neuroscience, psychology and behavioural economics, Tali’s work has mapped the neurological foundations of human optimism. She looks at how the mind deals with emotional, social and influencing factors, and how they determine behaviour and decisions.

Jonas Deichmann
Once around the world in the triathlon disciplines swimming, cycling and running. Jonas Deichmann made the impossible possible. While the world was in lockdown, Jonas circumnavigated the globe in 14 months full of borderline experiences, setbacks as well as moments of joy. Jonas swam 460km through the Adriatic Sea against currents, storms and sometimes even alone in the darkness. Then he cycled more than 20.000 km and crossed Siberia in the middle of winter. Finally, he ran 120 marathons in 117 days across Mexico and became a national hero. As the "German Forrest Gump" he made national news and thousands of people joined the run with millions following online. In the end there is an unbelievable story of courage and motivation.

Devan will outline the prevailing factors determining the fate of Emerging Markets into 2024 and beyond, arguing that emerging market central banks and corporates alike have greater policy flexibility and look set to benefit from relatively better balance sheet discipline in recent years than their developed market counterparts. How to leverage proprietary ESG research and generategreen alpha in Emerging Markets.
The traditional bull case for Emerging Markets emphasized the allure of its demographic tables, its unrivalled ability to provide skilled labor to the globalized world at cost, and its ample supply of natural resources. Amidst fracturing supply chains and a tense geopolitical backdrop, however, EM companies are flexing novel strengths. With post-pandemic policy evolution
and bolstered capital commitments paying off, many EM corporations have become local and global ES G leaders. A holistic view of these dynamic opportunities combined with an integrated ES G research and portfolio construction approach can provide investors with a differentiated way to access this asset class.
Workshop Objective: Introduction of one of the “ESG Originals” available on ABN AMRO Investment Solutions’ platform. Boston Common has a 20-year history of investing in Emerging Markets equities through the lens of ESG. We will review
their holistic, integrated proprietary ESG approach to investing in Emerging Markets equities, and the lessons learned.
Company Profile: Pioneer in multi-asset management for 25 years, ABN AMRO Investment Solutions is the asset management company of the ABN AMRO Bank. With ESG commitment at the heart of its business model, ABN AMRO Investment Solutions offers all its clients exclusive strategies in Europe that combine performance and responsible investment. With €19.9 billion of assets under management (as of 30/06/23) and a range of 40 strategies covering all asset classes and geographical areas, the company is a pure player in open architecture.
Its offer combines a selection of external funds and sub-advisory funds, notably through exclusive partnerships. ABN AMRO Investment Solutions thus provides the European market with unique access to “ESG Originals”, asset managers that have responsible investment in their DNA.
With approximately 90 employees, ABN AMRO Investment Solutions has offices
in France, the Netherlands and Germany.

Beyond the Benchmark - Opportunities in Emerging Markets Debt
Investing in emerging markets debt provides investors with a variety of investment options; from countries with strong institutional pillars to ones which are establishing them for future generations. Emerging markets debt (EMD) has historically provided investors with low beta and correlation to US Treasuries and the S&P 500, thereby providing an opportunity for diversification. Emerging markets debt can be accessed through a variety of investment vehicles, some that mimic common benchmarks. Deconstructing a benchmark’s risk factors can help investors understand some of the added risks they assume and can be leveraged by investment managers to identify attractive opportunities that are less correlated and possibly out of benchmark, thereby providing more well-rounded portfolio.
Workshop Objective: We will dive into emerging markets debt benchmark construction, explore embedded non-EM risks, and uncover the best relative value specifically in what we call the ‘tail end’ of emerging markets.
Company Profile: Artisan Partners was founded in 1994 with the objective of producing high value added and differentiated investment outcomes for institutional investors, through identifying, attracting and retaining high caliber talent in long term asset classes. We provide the resources of a full-scale, global firm paired with the independence of a boutique to each of our autonomous investment teams, who have the freedom to execute its own process based on its original research and creative perspectives. While our teams differ across market capitalizations, geographical regions, investment styles and product offerings, they are all highly incentivized to deliver long-term value for our clients.

Exceptional Companies for Exceptional Times – Growth Investing amidst Uncertainty
Growth investing is difficult, but it works very well if you buy and hold the biggest long term stock market winners.
This is difficult to do because it requires us to ignore the short-term preoccupations of our industry.
What matters is not if inflation goes down or unemployment goes up. It is innovation and entrepreneurship that drives growth and creates exceptional companies.
These exceptional companies have four characteristics that allow them to thrive in uncertain times and become the big winners that drive portfolio returns.
Workshop Objective:
1. To convince attendees that exceptional growth companies are good long-term investments regardless of short-term market or economic concerns.
2. To inspire the attendees to be optimistic.
3. To persuade the attendees that Baillie Gifford’s thoughtful and patient approach is the right one to find the big winners that drive returns.
Company Profile: Baillie Gifford, headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland, was established in 1908. Today we are a leading independent investment management firm with €267bn (as at 31 March 2023) in assets under management on behalf of a worldwide client base. We are an independent, privately owned, unlimited liability partnership with a culture underpinned by an enviable record of stability. Our single focus is on providing outstanding investment returns and service for our clients. As an active, long-term investor with a growth bias, we construct portfolios based on our fundamental analysis and proprietary research. We have an established European client base in specialist global and regional equities, fixed income and multi-asset portfolios.

The global population will reach 9 billion in 2035, China and India are adding 40% to global energy consumption by raising per-capita energy use, and CO2 emissions for energy are trending back towards the all-time high we saw in 2019. Fixed Income4 – A multi-sector approach for reliable income
As interest rate hiking cycles around the world move toward their peak, we could be at an inflection point for credit markets. Income represents a way to absorb potential volatility, but we believe a diversified approach is warranted in what remains a challenging environment. Capital Group Multi Sector Income (MSI) Fund (Lux) aims to generate attractive and reliable income by investing in both high-quality and higher-yielding credit sectors, and the portfolio managers have flexibility to adapt the asset allocation as conditions change. The fund size is USD 305m as per end of July 2023.
Workshop Objective: Get to know Capital Group’s new fixed income fund that combines the power of four income sectors. The workshop’s objective is to show why an investment in a well-diversified multi sector income is advantageous compared to investing in the underlying asset classes individually.
Company Profile: Capital Group is one of the world’s oldest and largest asset managers with more than US$ 2.4 trillion in AuM in equity, fixed income and multi-asset investment strategies (as at 30 June 2023). Founded in 1931, Capital Group has been singularly focused on delivering superior, consistent results for long-term investors using high-conviction portfolios, rigorous research and individual accountability. Helping uncertain investors target better outcomes.
Bearish? Bullish? Uncertainty seems high on the S&P 500 as there seems to be just as many data points to support either market view. Already up ~15% in 2023, investors face the rest of 2023, while then entering into the 2024 presidential election. Interest rates, inflation, valuations and recession risks seem to be coexisting with an AI-driven productivity boom, a potential bottom in Earning Per Share and a view that the worst is behind us. Interest Rates may appear to be peaking/have peaked. Long term investors should be wary that a 15% correction seems equally as likely as a 15% rally from here. Can an investor have their cake and eat it too? First Trust will unveil their solution to investors seeking upside participation in the market while aiming to provide a level of downside protection.
Workshop Objective:
Communicating First Trust’s economic forecast
Understanding the mechanics of target outcome ETFs
Highlight CBOE Vest Strategy’s potential downside protection and upside participation
Introduce First Trust’s suite of Target Outcome UCITS ETFs
Company Profile: First Trust is a privately owned U.S. based financial services firm established in 1991. Our mission and approach are simple. We aim to offer investors a better way to invest by providing transparent and innovative solutions - through knowing what we own, investing for the long term, employing discipline and rebalancing our portfolios.

Listed Infrastructure Equity: Cyclical headwind vs. secular tailwind
In the past 12 months, in the context of a broader global equities rally, listed infrastructure underperformed as a likely result of long-term sovereign yields remaining elevated.

Impax US Environmental Leaders Strategy – finding opportunities arising from the changing environment in the US economy
An introduction to our actively managed US Environmental Leaders Equity strategy. Building on Impax’s 25-year legacy of investing in sustainable markets, the US Environmental Leaders strategy invests in companies well positioned to benefit from the transition to a more sustainable economy. Through a rigorous bottom-up, patient, high conviction approach, the strategy allocates to companies that are best positioned to capitalize on the many secular growth opportunities arising from environmental and resource challenges. We will discuss the US regulatory environment and policy tailwinds such as the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and how the strategy identifies its investible universe to find opportunities supporting the transition. In addition to the IRA, other recent legislation such as the Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act and the CHIPS & Science Act are further accelerating the secular drivers of environmental markets which underpin this strategy.
Workshop Objective: How the US Environmental Leaders Strategies identifies its investible universe and how it finds the winners in this transition to a more sustainable US economy

The company seeks to invest in higher quality companies with strong business models that demonstrate sound management of risk. Euro Corporate Bonds – worth the extra risk?

Workshop Objective: Euro corporate bonds face competition from attractive yields offered for deposit accounts and government bond markets.
Are euro corporate bonds worth the extra risk?

How to integrate Sustainability into Healthcare Investments
We believe investors can allocate capital to listed equity to shape a more sustainable and efficient healthcare.
We have identified three focus areas that are central to health and quality of life and can be targeted via sustainable investments:
Increasing Healthcare costs: many companies are focusing on innovative treatments for chronic diseases that have the capacity of improving health & well-being while reducing healthcare costs
Increasing disease burden for society: plenty disruptive technologies and ground-breaking innovations (mRNA, cell and gene therapies, artificial intelligence, data sciences, etc.) have seen/established a proof of concept during the past decade and will be given the chance now to exploit their full potential to treat serious disabling and terminal diseases.
Increasing pressure on healthcare systems: we are confronted regularly with images of glaring weaknesses in the global health system. Shortage of live-saving drugs, exhausted healthcare workers and continuously increasing costs. However, both state healthcare systems as well as the private sector are responding with innovative solutions.
Workshop Objective: Delegates gain insights how leveraging sustainable investments in listed healthcare equities helps to alleviate healthcare cost burdens, mitigates disease impacts, and fosters innovation-driven healthcare system enhancements.

How generative AI could change the cyber security landscape
ChatGPT has become an unavoidable topic of conversation in 2023, offering a glimpse of artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities many believed was decades away. Generative AI has countless possible applications, including helping malware creators circumvent existing cyber defences.
Quantum computing is another potentially transformative technology with huge implications for digital security. Harnessing a quantum computer to break industry-standard encryption – the keystone of the digital economy – remains a theoretical threat for now, but as ChatGPT has shown technological progress isn’t always drip-fed.
In this unpredictable and fast-moving landscape, existing cyber defences may not be enough. Instead, cyber security providers capable of innovating at speed could hold the key to protecting the digital economy.
We will explore the biggest threats to the digital economy and the most promising potential solutions, before examining how investors can target the next generation of cyber security innovators.
Workshop Objective: The workshop aims to provide attendees with an overview of today's cybersecurity, focusing on the rising threats and emerging sectors of the cybersecurity industry.

Invest sustainably to capture the emerging markets opportunity
Why take a sustainable approach to investing in emerging markets equities? Ninety One portfolio manager Juliana Hansveden says it’s simply the best way to generate returns and manage risks in the asset class. Through a sustainable lens, Juliana believes investors can align portfolios with powerful structural transformations in emerging markets with the potential to drive growth and profits for select businesses.
These structural trends are arising as emerging societies strive to give all of their people access to better financial services, healthcare, education, transport and housing – and to do so via sustainable economic models fit for a net-zero, digital world. However, because sustainability disclosure and regulation are at an earlier stage in emerging markets, it’s not always easy to identify the companies likely to benefit. Juliana will explain how she believes an investment strategy should be structured to capture the EM sustainability opportunity.
Workshop Objective: Understand why taking a sustainable approach to investing in emerging equities is essential for investment success.
Company Profile: Investing for a world of change. Ninety One is an active, global investment manager managing €147.1 billion in assets (as at 31.03.23). Our goal is to provide long-term investment returns for our clients while making a positive difference to people and the planet.
Established in South Africa in 1991, as Investec Asset Management, the firm began as a small start-up offering domestic investments in an emerging market. In 2020, as a global firm proud of our emerging market roots, we demerged to become Ninety One.
We are committed to developing specialist investment teams organically. Our heritage and approach let us bring a different perspective to active and sustainable investing across equities, fixed income, multi-asset and alternatives to our clients - institutions, advisors and individual investors around the world.
