Private Credit: Unpacking the Opportunities in Direct Lending
Interest in Private Credit has increased substantially in the last 12 months as global interest rates have risen on the back of higher inflation. Retrenchment by traditional lenders has left a significant void that asset managers have filled to provide corporates with a stable source of capital. As the largest direct lender globally, Ares is ideally placed to provide insight into the key drivers within the private credit market and where we see the most attractive risk-adjusted opportunities.
Workshop Objective: Gain insight into the key drivers within the private credit market and the opportunities that exist for investors in US direct lending.

Sea Change May Create a Historic Private Credit Opportunity
In recent years, banks have had to contend with multiple challenges - including enormous sums of hung bridge debt and uncertainty surrounding potential regulatory changes – presenting an opportunity for private lenders to continue to gain market share. At the same time, many market participants expect rate cuts in 2024 which could temper demand for floating-rate assets; however, interest rates are still above their ten-year average, and yields available to large private lenders remain very attractive. Looking ahead to 2024, we remain optimistic about the potential for the asset class to deliver attractive, risk-adjusted, equity-like returns.
Workshop Objective:
Introduce the Oaktree Capital credit investing advantage and explain how the current market environment could create a historic private credit opportunity for investors.
Company Profile: When Brookfield acquired a majority stake in Oaktree Capital in 2019, it created one of the world’s largest alternative asset managers. Now Brookfield Oaktree Wealth Solutions is delivering the two firms’ capabilities to private wealth investors, in partnership with their advisors.
We are a global network of professionals dedicated to delivering alternative solutions to the wealth market. Our solutions are built to meet the varying needs of individual investors, and they are coupled with market and investment insights based on our unique products and portfolio expertise. Strategies for vintage 2024-2026
Private Markets growth continues and the positive trend remains in place, fuelled by strong track record, diversification benefits, and sustainability credentials. Where do we suggest investors focus on from here to maximize their risk-adjusted returns?
To answer that, we will first review what has done well. Then, using a thematic lens, look at attractive areas that will benefit from structural shifts such as AI and Energy Transition. We’ll close with some of our own views on how to bring it all together in a private markets programme.
Workshop Objective: To look back at where we’ve been in Private Markets, and, using a thematic lens, understand we think we are going, before discussing how to bring it all together.
